When staging your home, always try to remember what season we are in. It can be a little off-putting for someone walking into a home that looks like it belongs in the Caribbean, after stepping off the icy streets outside.
Likewise, entering a home that looks as dull as Winter, can seriously turn you off in the Summer.
By keeping your home neutral you can add splashes of colour depending on the season. A vase of yellow daffodils in the Spring, a flamingo coloured throw in Summer, cinnamon-scented candles burning in the winter.
Just simple additions and accessories here and there can make all the difference when home staging for the season.
Read below for tips and colours to use in each season:
Colours:
To choose a good starting point for your colour scheme think about what colours best convey the moods of the different seasons?
Here are some examples of colours by the seasons;
- Red: Commonly associated with the Christmas and the holiday season, this colour is a safe bet when staging a home during the holidays
- Orange: Autumnal leaves, pumpkin spice lattes, and Halloween!
- Yellow: This is a stimulating colour associated with the sun, hope, and energy. It brings to mind summer weather.
- Green: Strong associations with growth and nature (it’s the colour of plants, after all), this calming colour is great for the spring!
- Blue: A relaxing shade often used in the bedroom to promote relaxation. Darker shades work well in the winter, while lighter shades have a cooling effect in the hot and humid weather.
- Violet: This purple shade isn’t found as widely in nature compared to the others. But it can certainly be used as an accent colour in accessories to balance the other seasonal shades.
SPRING
Spring – March, April & May
After a cold winter, Spring draws buyers out from their long hibernations and they want to imagine what their lives will be like in a new home! Adding colour with live plants, bright pillows, and a new welcome mat!
Make sure your outdoor flowerbeds are well-kept, and bring in the best flowers to decorate your home for the season. Freshly-cut flowers in reflective glass vases also give off a pleasant aroma that will give potential buyers a great first impression of your home.
SUMMER
Summer – July, July & August
Bright and airy is the way to win over buyers during the summer months. Keep the window coverings light and add fresh flowers throughout the home. Yellow is the winning colour of the summer months. Tip: Keep the fans on during extremely hot days!
AUTUMN
Autumn – September, October & November
As the temperatures outside begin to cool down, stage your home to feel warm and cosy. Change out lighter-colored throw blankets to earth-toned ones. Place wooden sticks and leafy branches in vases and draw attention to your fireplace if there is one.
And don’t forget to keep your garden clean from falling leaves!
WINTER
Winter – December, January and February
While you may be drawn to decking out a home with holiday décor, it’s important to stick with more general themes when staging for a broad market. Remember that there’s a huge difference between holiday decorating and seasonal staging.
Add lots of pillows and blankets in the living room to create an extra sense of cosiness. And open all of the window coverings to bring in more light during the dark winter months.
BONUS TIP
I know, I know, I’m obviously going to promote home staging right? But the truth is, all you have to do is get your paintwork neutral, and leave the rest to a company like mine. Home staging is well worth the investment, because it can yield a much higher price on your property than you asked for or expected. A professional home stager knows exactly how to dress a home sympathetically, playing to a homes strengths and weaknesses, such as turning a dimly lit room into something bright, and a huge sunny family kitchen into the absolute selling point. Some people will even engage in a bidding war to get your property if it is staged in such a way it allows all buyer, imaginative or not, to see themselves living there. A home staging company will usually include the ordering and installation of furniture and accessories leaving you with absolutely nothing to worry about. Think about adding the cost of home staging into your selling costs, you won’t be sorry when you see the return on your investment.
